Many students don’t like working in a group as the grade can be affected due to the member who does not fulfil their tasks. I work best while working alone. At the end of the first term in November, we were given a group project in five during our weekly Tuesday lecture, about the details drawing of the stairs located inside the Engineering Building. The project is to find the details of the materials and how they were used, as well as how the stair was constructed.
The group meeting was held every end of the week. we started off with having a group meeting on how to process the work among the members. Then we came up with the idea of splitting up the project to individuals work according to the group member’s strong point, and each of us focuses on our own given part of the project while helping each other, making sure that we can cover as many details as we can. We split up the project into four sections (1) Drawing, (2) Measuring, (3) Technology part and lastly (4) Typing. I was given the part to get all the initial measurements and layout that were needed. Measuring each and every details part of the stairs was not an easy task which was complicated and it took a lot of time to complete the part.
I consider myself to be a hard-working student, however, I am not always the best with group work as I have difficulty communicating with group members. Doing a group project requires time and corporation as well as good communication with all of the group members. Within the group, there is a student who does not know each other in the first year and it gave us a chance to know more new people, but, it also gave us the disadvantage in communicating with group members as some student have difficulty communicating with new people.
The different of the group work and individual project is that working in a group require time and team management as we need to meet up to discuss the project, dedicating our time where it was needed which would make everything else run smoothly. In some case, some members did not show up and it makes us difficult to do group work which put us some pressure and late timing. However, working individual does not require to manage the time with the other members and able to work at my own pace.
However, our group project came out to be very successful as it communicated it clearly which got a lot of compliments from my tutors and classmates. In addition, we also got some comments which help us to improve our work as well.
Nevertheless, it was a great opportunity for me to learn new skills, ideas and tricks in interior design. Moreover, group work helps me to practice in communicating with others and improve in group work and acquire more knowledges and ideas. As well as it will be a good experience for the real-life job circumstance.
